The countdown has officially begun. Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is no longer a distant concept, it’s happening and for many sole traders and landlords, the changes will arrive sooner than expected.
From 6th April 2026, MTD will become mandatory for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. That means if your combined income from self-employment and/or property exceeds this threshold in the 2024-2025 tax year, you’ll need to keep digital records and submit your tax information using HMRC approved software, such as Xero.
And this is just the start.

Key MTD Income Tax Dates to Know
The MTD requirements will be introduced in stages:
£50,000+ income – from 6 April 2026
£30,000+ income – from 6 April 2027
£20,000+ income – expected from 6 April 2028 (subject to legislation)
If you’re anywhere near these thresholds, now is the time to start preparing.
What Is Making Tax Digital and Why Does It Matter?
Making Tax Digital is part of HMRC’s long-term plan to modernise the UK tax system. The aim is simple: reduce errors, improve accuracy and make tax reporting more efficient by moving away from manual records and paper-based systems.
Under MTD for Income Tax, you’ll be required to:
- Keep digital records of income and expenses
- Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
- File an end-of-period statement and a final declaration each year
- While this may sound daunting at first, when implemented correctly, MTD can actually make managing your finances easier, clearer and more efficient.

The Benefits of Going Digital Early
Waiting until the last minute can lead to unnecessary stress. Getting set up now offers real advantages:
✔ Less Pressure When MTD Goes Live
Transitioning to digital systems takes time. Starting early means you can learn at a comfortable pace, without worrying about looming deadlines or penalties.
✔ Clearer, More Accurate Records
Using cloud-based software like Xero gives you real-time visibility over your finances, reducing errors and helping you stay organised throughout the year.
✔ Better Cash Flow Awareness
With up-to-date records, you’ll have a clearer picture of your income, expenses and tax position – no more surprises.
✔ Confidence and Compliance
You’ll know your business is fully compliant with HMRC requirements, giving you peace of mind and allowing you to focus on what you do best: running your business.
